My "historical" images and "interpretations" are all reflections on art history, not art-historically correct observations of the past. Historical reflection allows the artistic process to be experienced primarily in relation to the future. Because it derives from a creative process, historical reflection can make something more primal visible in the corresponding images—therefore, it is always, in this sense, historically inaccurate, yet historically true. The historical truth of historical reflection, therefore, does not consist in depicting the past in a historically correct (accurate) manner, but in making the future visible in what has been. Historical reflection is the overcoming of a purely historical perspective, but above all, it is the overcoming of historicism. Surrealism, among others, has done a great deal of artistic groundwork in this regard because it rightly mocks the belief in rational explanatory models of our world without itself succumbing to the irrational.
