My "historical" images and "interpretations" are all reflections on art history, not historically accurate observations of the past. Historical reflection allows us to experience visual events primarily in relation to the future. Because it stems from a creative process, historical reflection can reveal something more primal in the corresponding images—therefore, it is always historically inaccurate, yet historically true. The historical truth of historical reflection, therefore, does not consist in depicting the past with historical accuracy, but in making the future visible within the past. Historical reflection is the overcoming of a purely historical perspective, but above all, it is the overcoming of historicism. Surrealism, among others, laid the artistic groundwork for this.
